BVPL introducing new children's programming

Children’s department staff members at the Bella Vista Public Library are excited to introduce new programming geared toward kids of all ages for the new year.

Read to a therapy dog
Staff members will launch a therapy dog reading program in February, giving little ones the opportunity to practice reading with a therapy dog at the library. The program will help young readers gain confidence, said Alex Newman, Children and Youth Services Manager.

“We hope that families will see this as a great way to strengthen their readers’ ability and connect with our friendly therapy dog,” she said.

Space is limited. The first reading date available is Monday, Feb. 27. To reserve a spot starting Wednesday, Feb. 1, call the library at 479-855-1753.

STEAM workshop
Staff members are also kicking off a monthly STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) workshop, beginning in January. Geared for ages 6-12, the workshop will feature activities focused on a STEAM theme and take place on the last Wednesday of each month.

Youth Services Library Assistant Ashdon Wilson said these STEAM workshops will enhance learning opportunities.

“We are excited to be able to offer a broad program that encourages families to come together and explore the world around them,” she said.

Amazeum staff will lead the first “Let’s Get Moving” workshop from 3 to 4 p.m. January 25. Activities include:

  • Traction Track: design a vehicle and test it out on different types of tracks.
  • Flying Creations: build something that flies and test it.
  • Circuit Blocks: Can you make the light turn on? Explore how to make electricity move.

The drop-in program will take place in the library’s Community Room. Reservations are not required, but space and parking are limited.

Lego challenges
Staff members will host a Library Lego Challenge each month, which is available to kids but also patrons of all ages. On Wednesday, Feb. 8, everyone is welcome to join in the “Flowers” challenge. This drop-in event will be available throughout the day. Reservations are not required.

The Bella Vista Public Library is located at 11 Dickens Place in Bella Vista and is open Monday through Saturday. For more details and a full list of programs offered, visit their website at https://bvpl.org/.
